It is not everyday that women get the recognition we deserve for our strength, curiosity, innovation, and accomplishments. Throughout history, women have been erased from the dominant, patriarchal narratives: we still have a lot of lost history to uncover, history that has in actuality been shaped by women. For now, Phil has decided to take a walk down memory lane and celebrate the women who have made Phil the awesome company it is today.

The Wonder Women of Phil: Honouring Women Who Have Shaped our Organization

We are a majority-women team here at Phil, and we tackle every challenge with a deep understanding of intersectionality: women are more than a gender. Women are incredibly smart and diligent. Women are Black, Indigenous, queer, disabled people. Women are leaders, family, and volunteers in the community. For women’s history month, we sat down with the women of Phil to showcase their contributions and values, shedding light on how far we have come.

Practical tips

How to blend strategic, sustainable business practices into your work

Climate change deeply affects the work of many nonprofit organizations, including widespread financial strains to address a higher demand for aid. Not to mention, the effects of climate change disproportionately harm neighbourhoods with greater percentages of low-income, Black, Indigenous, and/or other racialized communities. In order to continue chipping away at systemic inequities, you should consider aligning your organizational actions to address climate change.

Define sustainability

Decide how your not-for-profit will approach the issue—will you follow a “standard,” mainstream definition of sustainability to ground your work? Or does your organization define sustainability by specialized terms, like addressing geographically-proximate needs? Once you decide what makes the most sense for your organization, your sustainable business strategy begins.

Devise a strategy

How specific and measurable are your organization’s sustainability goals? How important are these goals to the overall organizational strategy? To bake your values into your practices, you must bake environmental sustainability into your strategy. Practically, this can look like monitoring and recording your waste production every 3 months and adjusting your processes accordingly.

Do what works for you

Little tweaks you make to your everyday processes can add up to a big environmental impact, so don’t feel discouraged if you lack the resources to strictly monitor your CO2 footprint. One simple way you can make your nonprofit more sustainable is to instate a work-from-home or hybrid model. Working from home four days a week can reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by around 10%. You can also partner with organizations with missions to achieve justice for Black, Indigenous, other racialized communities, women, and youth.
