More than 60% of people around the globe don’t have faith that not-for-profits can accomplish their missions. How can we change this perception? It all starts with transparency. The more you openly communicate a commitment to authentic reporting on financials and mission-driven projects, the greater donations, engagement, and progress the not-for-profit sector will reap.

Transparency on social media
| |
Repurpose content from your annual reports or monthly newsletters. This is an easy peasy way to be transparent with your external and internal stakeholders.
| |
Capture every piece of your story through images, short but meaningful captions, and more. Take a simple, overstated caption like “we value inclusivity” and give it meaning: “Our team was overjoyed to see people from all walks of life participating in our recent volunteering event.”
| |
Offer a behind-the-scenes look | | Use social media as a way to nurture your authenticity. By offering your audience a peek into what a workday looks like for your volunteers or even what a typical board meeting accomplishes, you are showing your stakeholders a strong commitment to openness.

Exactis Innovation (Exactis) is a Canadian not-for-profit focused on improving cancer survivorship by empowering the healthcare ecosystem to make more timely data-driven decisions. The data they collect from medical records, tumour tissues, and blood samples of cancer patients can help advance cancer research and accelerate the development of new cancer treatments. But they were having a hard time telling their story and summarizing who they were and what they did. The need for communications support to lay the foundation for their evolving journey became clear, and Phil swooped in, excited for the challenge.
Little steps, big changes
One change that led to big (fast) results, was revamping the look and feel of their quarterly newsletter. In terms of content, Phil suggested highlighting key members of their team, and adding more human-centered stories at the very top, with more scientific, niche content at the bottom. Copywriting, editing, and design support, which included a custom-designed Mailchimp template, helped Exactis launch a professional-looking, engaging newsletter - and the data shows it. Their top 3 articles received a 200% increase in the total number of clicks!

It is always so satisfying to see how the seeds we plant with a communications plan and supplemented support can provide steady, sustainable growth for clients like Exactis.
